Top of a marine barometer similar to those issued to James Cook for his Pacific voyages, by Nairne & Blunt, about 1775. (NAV0805, detail)

It is important to recognise, however, that dead reckoning remained the staple of navigation, and that the development of new instruments for finding longitude went hand in hand with improvements to older ones. Significant improvements were made to compasses in the eighteenth century, in particular with improved methods for producing needles that reliably retained their magnetism. Telescopes were enhanced as well, through the introduction from the 1760s of the achromatic lens, which became standard for hand-held telescopes by the end of the century. Improvements in the manufacture of marine barometers also saw them become more common for meteorological observations at sea.
